Where your Money is Going
Program Expenses
This includes your food, accommodation, airport transfers, and, if applicable, language lessons. We insist that teachers, host families, and other local staff are fairly remunerated for their services.
Program Management
Exchange Managers are our in-country staff. These are English-speaking residents of your destination country, hired to be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the entire time that you are in-country.
Your Exchange Manager will pick you up from the airport and drop you off at the end of your stay, introduce you to your host family or guesthouse staff, and be there whenever you need them. They are also the person who will be there to answer all of your questions from how to bargain like a local for vegetables in Cameroon, to where to find Peru’s tastiest Aji de Gallina. Before you arrive, they are the logistical mastermind arranging your accommodation, individual organization placement, and language course.
THEX selects our partners with care. The quality of the programming we provide to you depends in large part on our partnerships overseas. Resources are put into interviewing, meeting, and screening partners who will work with our organization in any capacity.
Program Donation
All program fees include a donation to a partner organization. Some partners are more in need than others, while some projects receive more volunteers than others. Therefore, your donation may not necessarily go to the organization you are working with. We give the contribution to where it is needed most. This donation may include materials for you to carry out your volunteer work or implement a new idea.
Marketing
Considerable effort goes into finding motivated people, just like you. We recruit volunteers online, at volunteer fairs, on the phone and in-person.
The internet is a competitive place, and it can cost up to $5 when someone clicks on just one ad link in Google. A little steep? Yes. We advertise primarily with leading volunteer abroad search engines and through the use of social media. We do everything possible to advertise in an efficient and cost-effective manner given today’s market.
Organizational Development
We are growing. We are often asked to expand our programming, both by potential volunteers and developing communities in need. There is such potential to be realized! We think innovation and diversification is important, as such we put resources towards researching and developing partnerships. It is only through doing so that we can ensure our volunteers are engaged in top-quality impactful volunteering. We grow at a rate which we can sustain.
Overhead
We operate a very efficiently run office. Costs such as salary, web maintenance, computers, utilities, rent, accounting, and legal fees need to be covered. We are dedicated to operating in a cost-effective manner while ensuring our organization is professionally managed.
